Optimising infrastructure – the way forward

Five key success factors emerged from our conversations with digital leaders:

Visibility of the infrastructure is vital

Digital leaders responding to the first ‘daring to disrupt’ survey told us that they were well aware of the need to have a single overarching view of the business’ infrastructure and applications. Many leaders had already set up a dashboard and alerts so that they had good visibility of how their infrastructure was supporting their business-critical apps.

In more recent conversations, digital leaders described their real world issues and told us more about what they hoped to achieve with better visibility. Jeremy Smith, Global Head of IT Risk and Security at Avery Dennison, says: “We have employees in India, for instance, who may have challenges with internet bandwidth. We need to differentiate whether issues are down to web conference capability, or if it’s their home internet. We’re constantly looking at ways that we can improve that visibility. There is no single dashboard that’s going to tell you everything. So, it’s really trying to find those right metrics and capabilities that can help us get to answers and solutions faster.”

One of the drivers for change is the amount of alerts and the amount of reporting – we are drowning in information.

Once businesses have single-view visibility of their infrastructure, that can be tuned so that the business can get more value from it. Rick Casarez at eBay points out, “You have to be careful about what’s displayed in that single pane of glass. My personal view is, as an operations leader I don't care about green. If things are working as designed, I don’t want to hear about it. They’re working. We display yellows, and reds, that’s what we’re concerned with. And keep in mind, it’s still a human that has to consume this information.”

Action Points

  • Tune the dashboard view of your infrastructure operations to provide most value.
  • Make sure dashboard data is helping improve user and customer experience.
